photo of bronze plaque on brick wallA bronze plaque has been installed at the Garden City Public Library to commemorate the renovation of the Children’s Room, which was completed in May 2023.

The project, which took place over a three-year period from 2020 to 2023, created a lively environment with colorful, decorative furniture, two new smartboards to encourage interactive play, reading-based activities, and more activities designed to boost critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills through unique hands-on learning opportunities.

The plaque includes the names of current and former Library and Village Trustees involved in the project. This project evolved over time and the unique contributions by each Library and Village Board of Trustees, as well as the Village Trustee-Library liaisons, were varied and significant.

Library Chair Randy Colahan, who was chair throughout the process commented, “This project was conceived in 2012 and achieved through the community focus groups, Legislative aid and NY State grants from current and former legislators and the support of the Village. In addition to the current Library and Village Boards of Trustees, listed are past Trustees on both boards as well as other individuals, including the late Bobby Menges, student ambassador, who contributed immensely. We’re very proud of this accomplishment.” Also mentioned on the plaque are the Library Director and Assistant Director, former and present Village Counsel and the architects.

Produced by US Bronze of New Hyde Park, the plaque is located near the front entrance.
